Start with Ledger — secure your crypto in minutes

Ledger.com/start is the fast path from unboxing to using your Ledger hardware wallet safely. This guide focuses on practical steps, strong security habits, and recent product conveniences so you can manage keys, sign transactions and interact with dapps with confidence.

Hardware wallets keep private keys offline — that means your crypto assets stay inaccessible to web attackers and phishing sites. Ledger pairs intuitive device setup with a secure recovery flow and firmware-tested protections.

What you’ll do

1. Unbox & power on

Open the package, plug the Ledger into your computer or phone, and follow on-device prompts. Only approve actions on the device screen — never on your computer alone.

2. Install Ledger Live

Download Ledger Live from the official site (link provided on your device card) and install the companion app to manage accounts, install apps and send/receive tokens.

3. Set a PIN & write the recovery

Choose a PIN you’ll remember but is hard to guess. Ledger will display a recovery phrase — write it down on the supplied card and store it offline. Do not photograph or share it.

4. Install crypto apps

In Ledger Live, install apps for Bitcoin, Ethereum, and other chains you use. Each app isolates that blockchain’s keys for safer operation.

Security essentials

Keep your recovery phrase offline, never share it, and beware of unsolicited links or scripts asking for approvals. Use Ledger Live’s built-in checks and verify addresses on the device screen before approving transactions.

Enable firmware updates when prompted — updates patch vulnerabilities and add features. Always download updates only through Ledger Live.

Recent conveniences

Ledger continues to streamline onboarding: smoother mobile pairing, expanded token support, and clearer transaction previews on-device. These improvements reduce mistakes and speed everyday use without sacrificing security.
